Sometimes this means completely overhauling everything, often we just take over where things are and improve on the work that's already been done.

With most of these platforms, the work never ends. Ongoing optimisation takes time and is pivotal for improving performance and achieving scale. We constantly test new ideas, update creative and tweak the settings to get more out of the money you're spending.

4. Reporting

Which channels work best for ecommerce?

Every online store and brand is different. For most industries we find Google Shopping and Performance Max to be the best place to start. This ensures you've positioned your brand at the bottom of the funnel, where your customers are ready to buy.

Beyond this, we look into tailoring a mix of channels that work for your specific online business. Layering in additional Search campaigns is usually a great way to begin reaching your customers at more points along their journey. Standard search ads, SEO for organic listings and Bing round out most search strategies.

Social media can fill all stages of the funnel, from brand awareness through to purchase. Remarketing via Meta enables online stores to capitalise on a strong Search strategy, whilst broader targeting can help to capture buyers who aren't searching for a product.

We recommend a multichannel approach for all of our ecommerce clients.

How do we measure performance?

We measure all the revenue and sales captured on your website. But this is just the start. We typically implement full ecommerce tracking, enabling us to see which products, brands and categories are driving sales, as well as add to carts, product views, listing page views and more.

We also typically track enhanced conversions enabling us to match customers back to logged in users that can often be missed due to ad blockers. Additionally, we try to implement cost of goods sold and profit-margin tracking for brands with products that vary in substantially in margin.

How we implement all this depends on your website, CMS and technical capabilities. We typically work with GTM and your developer, or implement via native integrations in Shopify and other CMS'.

How much does digital marketing cost?

This isn't a question that we can answer as it always depends on the business and its goals. For ecommerce clients, we can typically work with budgets starting from $2,000 per month and up.

With that said, how much you end up spending typically depends on how profitable the ads we run are. We have worked with a few ecommerce businesses who've started with $2,000 budgets and have ended up spending over $50,000 - $100,000 due to scaling the ads at a return that is profitable for them.

Do you have the expertise that larger agencies have?

It's true that large agencies breed marketing experts. But they're also a learning arena for beginners and typically only accessible for large businesses with endless budgets.

We're trying to turn this around. We've worked at big agencies and we've worked with New Zealand's largest ecommerce budgets. Now we're taking this expertise and using it to support and work with ambitious, NZ brands - no matter the budget.

What do other agencies do wrong when marketing for ecommerce?

The main issue we see is an over-reliance on automated campaigns. Performance Max and Advantage+ are the best campaigns for most online stores, but they aren't set and forget. Segmentation, creative optimisation, negative keywords and feed optimisation are often neglected in favour of simple setups.

We also see a lot of accounts not maximising their data. Dynamic remarketing and audiences, customer lists and, most importantly, ecommerce conversion tracking are often missing.
